8. What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is the medical term for baldness; there are various types of alopecia, including alopecia areata. Alopecia is a condition that causes a person's hair to fall out. It is an autoimmune disease; that is, the person's immune system attacks their body, in this case, their hair follicles. When this happens, the person's hair begins to fall out, often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter. The extent of the hair loss varies; in some cases, it is only in a few spots. In others, the hair loss can be greater.
9. Who gets Alopecia?
Anyone can develop alopecia; however, your chances of having alopecia are slightly greater if you have a relative with the disease. In addition, alopecia occurs more often among people who have family members with autoimmune disorders such as diabetes, lupus, or thyroid disease.
10. What is male and female pattern baldness?
Male and female pattern baldness is a (MPB) form of androgenetic alopecia. It accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. By age 35, two-thirds of American men will have some degree of appreciable hair loss and by age 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. About 25% of men who suffer from male pattern baldness begin the painful process before they reach 21.
Hair loss in women isn't always as straightforward as it is in most men. In men about 90% of all cases are caused by hereditary male pattern baldness. In women, however, hair loss can be triggered by a multitude of conditions and circumstances.
Diagnostic tests for hormones levels, iron and thyroid should be performed to help pinpoint the hair loss in women. For many patients these tests usually come back with readings within the normal range, but these tests can at the very least eliminate the possibility of certain disorders causing hair loss.
